Best Turned Out

For those best turned out for the day’s hunting. Judging will be on accuracy of image to all the information provided above. Image can be of the equipage before the hunt, during, or after, at the pub. More than one horse and rider can feature per image, and the entry can double as your hunt picture, provided you can see the full body of your horse and rider entry(ies).

The detail – zoom in guys!! All the way! It’s so worth it for the shading and colours, unless you zoom in you don’t get the full effect, like going up close to a beautiful painting in a gallery. I love the palette, it really captures the atmosphere I was going for – some of the other entries were a little too green for me, this had just the right balance for that wintery Boxing Day atmosphere. Accurate tack, and I loved the presence of the dog too – who also tied in nicely with the palette!

As usual your attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed. Little things, like the waistcoat, the jacket lining, the top hat attachment, all fantastic. Again, I love seeing a saddle that really looks like it fits ;) the rain effect is perfect for the amount of rain mentioned! And I loved the addition of the clouds of breath in front of Horatio’s nostrils!

This one was simpler and I absolutely adore the composition. This picture just has me enchanted and going back again and again to look at…for more info on that see “Best Jumped” comments ;)

God bless you and your clip marks! 10/10 for accuracy! I adore the way you use foliage brushes to give your art that extra depth, too. I must quiz you on your techniques some time because between the textures and the brushes there’s something so cosy and illustrative-like about your art!

I'm particularly enjoying the contrast here between sleek 'n' neat Doomy & George and au natural Meredith, and Gareth’s ratcatcher tweed! I love the character in this image as always with your art J and I really think it captures the variety of characters that turn out at a hunt, too.

Team Chase

To be eligible for this prize, your “team” should consist of 3 or more parties, including at least one horse and rider pair (which counts as one party). Judging will be based on the “feel” of the image – have you depicted a fun, thrilling chase scene? – anatomy of all drawn counterparts – colouring & shading – and story! Please include a short story about your chase (min. 250 words).

This is easily one of my favourite images. Everything about it is superb. The detail in the composition and each element of the image, from the robin in the tree, to the bark of the tree, the hedge, the tack and the texture in the tweed coats…I could go on. Oh wait – the mud!!
Also everyone notice the crosshatching shading? Very visible on the dog :)
Just overall this image had it aaaall for me.
The story was also so well written – the part about the drizzle was my favourite, and I loved the inclusion of other people’s characters. Also adoring your description of your fearless dog, and how you managed to include all three parts of the day that I mentioned in the journal :) a wonderful entry all round!

The atmosphere of this image for me is just captivating. The heavy skies telling of the rain I warned you all about, the wide open country with the dusky trees in the background, I just love it. I’d love to do something similar in the near future myself! I really love your shading on the horses and dogs, so everybody zoom right in to the picture to make sure you can appreciate it too – this picture gives at multiple levels and I just love that. I also thoroughly enjoyed the story :)

Hooray for your accurate clips again! I’m seriously in love with their fuzzy outlines. I loved the fields in the background of this, the one that looks slightly farrowed, and that adorable white dog who isn’t looking particularly white anymore…and once again, I hope you’re feeling the texture love emanating from my virtual direction. The character in your riders’ faces was also just spot on what I wanted to see! Overall this image really represented the camaraderie and sportsmanship of a good day’s hunting and that’s why I think this image deserves a special mention.
PS, crappy story is not crappy – cute story is cute, absolutely suitable for a little addendum to a fab image

I love the colour palette again in this one, and the motion blur and action really give that chase feel I was looking for! I would’ve liked to see a little more in the background to give the image some depth, a more detailed face on the rider, and unfortunately the lack of story meant I couldn’t really judge it alongside the other entries – but one special mention is anatomy of all three chase team members is fab, particularly of the dogs :D
Gibsonvale Hunt - Team Chase 2 by ElreniaGreenleaf by ElreniaGreenleaf
This image is brilliant, it just didn’t speak to me as much as the other did, hence this one doesn’t get the special mention! It’s still a fab image in its own right – the foliage detail at the base of the hedge and the patchy frosty grass are a couple of details I particularly enjoyed. I love how the horses look that bit sleeker compared to the cobs/ponies in the previous images, too! And Bruce is adorable, he looks absolutely thrilled to be out!

Best Jumped

This entry can double as your Best Turned Out entry. Show your horse & rider pair jumping any obstacle mentioned above. Marks are as for Team Chase.
Gibsonvale Best Jumped by oakhollowdWINNER -  The Boxing Day Hunt : Different Country by oingy-boingy by oingy-boingy
This was absolutely my favourite image out of those submitted for Best Jumped. What an expressive horse! And the rider looking so cool and collected! Your traditional outfits and tack detail are just so captivating, I could stare at this all day just drinking it in. And that stone wall, which you drew, stone by stone, just wow – the snow on top and drifted at the base just made it for me! I think I need to attend the Oingy School of Art. I also just love the detail in the background, the snow dusted foothills and the outlines of hedgerows, that real watercolour feeling, and the way the horse and rider POP out with the crisper digital art feel, this image is something I’m aspiring to in my own art and also captures a fantastic fantasy moment in time!
Gibsonvale Special by oakhollowdSPECIAL MENTION -  The Boxing Day Hunt : A Mighty Leap by oingy-boingy by oingy-boingy
Your description of the jump, the horse and rider’s attitudes towards it, and the fact you’ve probably come up with the scariest looking natural jump I could imagine…you’ve encompassed the real meaning of “best jumped” for me! However, for me at least, it just wasn’t as captivating as your other image. Adored the story though altogether, and I’m absolutely sure the Gibsonvale will welcome Horatio and Amyas back any time they’d like a trip into the wilds of the North for more hunting adventure!
The Boxing Day Hunt : Fortune Favours The Brave by oingy-boingy by oingy-boingy
Something about the way the rider’s face and body language it so completely absorbed in the jump! I love the horse too, and its jumping style (you can’t beat a gorgeous grey!), out of the three he’s probably the one I’d love to try the most! The picture lacked just a little something extra in the background, or maybe it was the angle the horse and rider were depicted, I’m not sure, that didn’t quite bring it up to special mention standard, but the story was a perfect accompaniment to add another dimension to the image and make that horse-rider bond so tangible.

Oh my goodness, what on earth is Jazz doing?? Haha, her rather eclectic style had me giggling here :P her eclectic tack also made my day! I need an LED breastplate for my own pony, she’d rock it! Laufey’s jump is far neater, for a dressage horse he’s doing a rather lovely job out in the field! I enjoyed your story again, I love your dialogue particularly
The Gibsonvale Hunt by sobreiros by sobreiros
I have to say, both horses are exhibiting beautiful jumps here, I particularly loved the shape Samhain’s making with her front legs. I don’t have too much else to say here as I waxed lyrical about your entry previously – I wish I could give firsts to everybody but you’ve only just lost out on this occasion!

This was such a fun show - I loved doing all the backgrounds and fluffy clipped ponies so I can't wait for the next! :D Cheers for all the positive comments too - it always amuses me when people are so impressed with my textures - it's honestly the simplest thing, there's no skill required, haha! - but thank you all the same! :D :D :D

(and LOL, yes, I stuck Jazz in the 'best jumped' ironically - honestly, I think she's part deer. XD)
